The board opens as you play. You start with the center loop, then the volcano erupts forming another path, then the whirlpool opens up giving you access to the underwater stuff and the balloon comes in taking you up the cloud path. This was my first attempt at isometric 3D.

Day 30-The Properties of Liquid Air

I came across this photo in a book of Canadian Photography. Taken in 1950, it depicts a U of T professor demonstrating the properties of liquid air. You can just see the reverence for science and teaching...I mean, he is wearing a 3 piece suit with a watch dangling from his pocket and an army helmet in case something should go wrong and he is spraying the first 3 rows of his class with liquid gas. In the photo, you can see the different states of liquid...first a giant cloud of gas followed by drops of water streaking out the other end. In the black and white photo, the water droplets almost look like embers flying off a fire. The blackboard is filled with equations and diagrams all written in perfect handwriting.

I'll post more from the sketchbook next week. This is from the kid's art wall in the basement. I took a couple photos which were pretty terrible and under lit but with the Exposure Adjustment Layer in Photoshop, you can do some pretty crazy things. The previous image of the cloud was pretty much done with just a few Exposure Layers stacked up on top of each other and I used the chalk brush and layer masks to punch a hole through the layers. When did Photoshop add Exposure layers?...I love those.

Day 16-Memories of childhood drawings

When I think back to childhood drawings, I remember scenes of stick people scattered all over the page shooting at each other. That was the joy of those little plastic green army men. You could set them all up in elaborate configurations. I also remember drawings that my Grandfather would do. He would be at the top of a hill with a cowboy had on, peeing on a little character at the bottom of the hill. Of course that little character was a GOOD-FOR-NOTHING-GRANDSON. My Grandfathers drawings were inspired by the type of humor in Coyote and Roadrunner cartoons.

A lot of the drawings in my sketchbook are just places that I inhabit...the living room...the kitchen...the bus stop. They are kind of mundane but they occupy some time connecting lines together.

Sometimes leaving stuff out is better than putting stuff in. When there is an absence of information, your brain wants to fill in the rest. When you sketch with a pencil, you kind of move around an object looking for the right line but when I draw with a pen, the first line is the last line and I kind of like that rather than going back and fine tuning and futzing. You might not get a great likeness and the drawing might have all kinds of distortions but I like those little distortions that happen in the moment.

The little whiskers on the face correspond to the spots that I sometimes miss if I shave quickly. Funny how you put those details in when you aren't even conscious of them as you are drawing.

A DRAWING A DAY- Day 1

I thought I'd go through my sketchbooks and post a "DRAWING A DAY" for a while. None of these are really all that special, mostly drawn while waiting for a streetcar or for my soup to boil. They are pretty much all drawn with a Pilot Fineliner pen in little pocket sized sketchbooks.

If you are at home thinking to yourself, "I'd like to draw something..." but you are at home staring at your wall and you just drew your couch yesterday, if you have some magazines such as National Geographic, you can always find something to draw like this wrestler guy. I broke out some poster paints that I had since I was a kid for this one. Amazingly they hadn't dried out. They were great and didn't make the paper buckle (surprisingly).

Big Escape 4. Escape Through Time.

This is the final game in the Big Escape series. Can you catch that slippery rascal Dr. Know it All once and for all?

This time we start the game in the study of Dr. Know it All. What's this? A Time Machine. He has gone too far.

We stumble across some of his time travel notes. I always liked in movies like a Beautiful mind when you see a chalk board full of equations and symbols that seem to speak of something just beyond your grasp. When you "don't know" something, your imagination seems to want to fill in the blanks. When I was a kid, there was this game Impossible Mission and you were trapped and had to find a way to escape. Every now and then when you'd get zapped by a robot, a voice (very advanced for the time) would come in and say "STAY A WHILE! STAY FOREVER!" Although you never fully knew why you were stuck in this place, you wondered..."what's this all about?"

The future. Robotopia. A place where people and Robots live happily together. Here's Robotopia city with the Master Control Know it All computer in the background. Sort of like the all knowing Wizard in the Wizard of Oz.

In Big Escape, when you encounter something such as a sea monster or an abonimable snowman, you get the statement "There's nothing to see here."

I don't really own anything from my Grandfather other than a couple of belts and a few Western ties. My favorite belt has a horseshoe for a buckle with a 1921 coin on it with the phrase E Pluribus Unum. I always wondered about that phrase but I had never looked into it's origins. One night which happened to be the first night I had worn my grandfather's belt in about a year, I sat down and watched the Wizard of Oz. At the end of the movie, Oz says to Dorothy that he will return her to the land of E Pluribus Unum. Although the phrase is used as a motto for the United States, I prefer to think of it as going home.

Oh, and it means "Out of many, one".

One morning Chloe was having her breakfast and she was asking for some mango. I said that we didn't have any mango left but there was some in her smoothie. She looked down at her cup and shouted at the top of her lungs "COME OUT MANGO!!!!"

First attempt at silk screening.

I took a Silk Screening class down at Model Citizen in Kensington. You have to have a love of analog to do silk screening. It's a lot of work but pretty satisfying when you peel back the screen and haven't FUBARRED the whole thing. Here's the original little drawing. Here we have the hairy analog guy to the left and the digital robot future to the right.

9 times out of 10, when you start drawing a moustache and combine that with a big head of hair, you will get someone who looks like Burton Cummings. The moustache on the real Burton Cummings wasn't made up of individual hairs however. It was a super thick mass of hair like cotton or felt or something. How did he come up with a song about putting sugar in your coffee anyways?

I have been wanting to do something with gouache for a while. These are for Chloe and Isabel.

Opera intermissions.

In the Opera game, there were little intermissions. This one didn't make it into the game but I liked it. Basically the idea was...this old guy is sitting in his chair with his cane propped at his side and the record player goes on. He is transported to different places. In this one, the music rises and crashes as he is zapped with the X-Rays of the sun. I'd love to develop these into longer animations. Although I wasn't conscious of it at the time, this character may be based on my neighbor who used to be a clarinet player for the London Symphony Orchestra. Unfortunately he had a fall and lost a lot of his motor co-ordination. He still loves to read and can enjoy music even if he can't get around like he used to.

Carmen

When we first see Don Jose, he doesn't eyes. He sniffs the rose that Carmen tosses at his feet and he falls in love.
...But Carmen is in love with Escamillo...oooh that hurts.

...and here is the interloper seen larger than life.
At the end of Carmen, Don Jose is overcome with anger and kills Carmen. We wanted to be true to the story but also didn't want to show this gruesome event to the kiddies. The animation ends with a montage of the bullfight. The bull lunges at the camera, Escamillos red cape flies through the air (red fabric in operas were often used to show blood) and Carmen's rose falls to the stadium floor.
